TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK

Tomorrow is “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work” Day, a program begun years ago and originally based on the concept of taking our daughters to work in order to provide young girls exposure to the workplace, something not as readily available to their mothers and grandmothers.

As the years have passed and things have, well, not equalized, but at least moved toward a more level state, the program has been reformatted to include not only daughters but also sons.

The idea being that while the focus was originally on teaching young females about opportunities in the workplace and giving them an equal chance, fathers and sons play an equally important role in the family and at work and should not be undercut the way women have been for so many years.

This program, created by the Ms. Foundation for Women, offers companies the opportunity to celebrate and educate their future workforce and provides today’s youth with the chance to understand how their future workplace will impact them.

This program benefits boys and girls across the country by encouraging them to

  • Dream without gender limitations
  • Think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives
  • See the link between what they learn at school with the actual working world
  • Understand that a family-friendly work environment is an employer and family issue and not just a woman’s issue
  • Discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life

So for all you parents out there that work for employers who offer a day to celebrate the youth of tomorrow, consider bringing your son or daughter to work with you in order to share with them not just the place where you work, but to share the possibilities in their future.

I just read your other blog on The Impact of Immigration and Offshoring on the American Workforce. Along with this blog, you’ve made me realize even more how important it is to celebrate our young and educate them early about the world of business.
